Johanne Gomis, is a basketball player, trained in Valenciennes and now captain of the ESBVA, one of the flagship clubs of the Women’s Basketball League. Around a coffee at the Coffee Makers in Lille, the winger from Villeneuve d’Ascq, also a municipal councilor in charge of sports and health at the town hall of Lille since 2020, talks about the place of women in society, in the political world that discovers and on the importance of a day like this: International Women’s Day.
“Every day, women matter”
Johanne Gomis is a committed woman in the field (captain of the ESBVA) and in politics since 2020 (municipal councilor of Lille). A double project that the Villeneuve d’Ascq club accepted without worry. “ESBVA has always supported me, because they too want women to be engaged,” thanks Johanne, who is in favor of International Women’s Day. “It’s good once a year to remember what women wear, to be honored. It’s like Valentine’s Day, not just February 14 that you have to tell your sweetheart that you love her. Every day of the year, women matter. If one day a year we agree to honor women who are inspiring, who are forces of nature, who fight on a daily basis, that’s not bad. »
Among the inspiring women that Johanne Gomis thinks of, the mayor of Lille Martine Aubry for her career (see below), her mother “everyday heroine” and committed sportswomen.
“Many basketball players have a message to convey”
Johanne Gomis is an experienced basketball player, professional for 21 years and for whom generations of basketball players have evolved. The players who “thought, lived, slept basketball” that Johanne met in her early days evolved at the same time as society and the arrival of social networks.
“It is important that the sportsman makes his voice heard, which gives a lot of committed sportswomen. Many basketball players are very engaged on social networks, have a message to convey, beyond the great basketball players that they are. “The elected mayor of Lille then quotes the French Internationals Diandra Tchatchouang and Aby Gaye, both sportsmen involved in the “Study Hall” and “Terang’Aby” projects.
“Political commitment that represents me”
For her part, the native of Nogent-sur-Oise has made a commitment in her own way in 2020, joining the list “Lille in common, Lille in confidence” carried by Martine Aubry. “She is first of all an inspiring woman for her career, a model that we want to follow and with whom we want to engage. For the past two years, Johanne Gomis has therefore sat on the municipal council as a delegated adviser for sport-health, sport for all, “unlike my professional life where I do performance sport” summarizes Johanne.
