I’m going to put some fists on some “i’s” right away. The Bloosmüsik, I like that. It’s not a marching band, because there’s only brass and percussion in a marching band. In the Bloosmüsik, literally the music where one blows, it is necessary to add the woodwinds, like the clarinets and the flutes.
The Bloosmüsik comes closer to the definition of harmony. So, Oum pah pah? Well yes, by definition, as explained by Roger Halm, Oompah or Umpapa is the rhythmic sound of deep brass in a band. The oom-pah sound is usually made by the tuba alternating between the root of the chord and the 5th – this sound is said to be the oom. The pah is played on the off-beats by higher instruments like the clarinet, accordion or trombone. When it plays in triple time like the waltz, it gives oom-pah-pah.
In the Bloosmüsik, this dialogue is often between the tuba and the clarinet. Treat Oumpapah’s Bloosmüsik as much as you want, not even badly. And let’s also remember that the repertoire of the Bloosmüsik orchestras is very varied, from traditional to classical, including jazz and pop. In Alsace, generally, the harmony and Blosmüsik orchestras are linked to municipalities, and to specific costumes. Geispolsheim’s red vests, Lipsheim’s blue jackets, etc. It is therefore with surprise that the Rhinwagges orchestra was created in 1976, without geographical link with a municipality, a group of friends, former musicians of the military music of the 153rd RIMECA of Mutzig. The orchestra is among the most famous in Alsace, they have won numerous prizes.
