CBC Twitter account: ‘Government-funded media’ mention removed

U-turn at Twitter, which on Thursday removed the mention “government-funded media” for the CBC account, which sports a new label “Media and News Industry Company”

The label “government-funded media” was added to the Twitter account of the English-language network of Radio-Canada in the wake of a request made to this effect by Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

To protest against the decision of the social network bought by Elon Musk, CBC and Radio-Canada have decided to suspend their Twitter accounts since Monday to defend their independence from politics.

“Our journalism is impartial and independent. To claim otherwise is false. This is why we are suspending our activities on Twitter,” the public broadcaster said on its Twitter accounts.

The Global Task Force for Public Media recalled in a statement Thursday that the independence of the four public broadcasters, including Radio-Canada, having received this label without warning “was protected by law and framed by their editorial policies”.
