CBC forced to cancel New Year’s Eve special

Citing financial constraints, CBC said Friday it was canceling its New Year’s Eve special.

The program will be replaced by a special broadcast of Just For Laughs, hosted by comedian Mae Martin, followed by episodes of Comedy Night with Rick Mercer.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, the public broadcaster cited “financial pressures” to justify the notable change.

For more than twenty years, CBC has emphasized New Year’s Eve with a special broadcast of the comedy television series Royal Canadian Air Farce.

Since 2018, it has been replaced by a special one-hour program, which included musical numbers and fireworks.
