The day after the vote for the inclusion of the right to abortion (voluntary termination of pregnancy) in the Constitution, this March 8, 2024, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, held a historic sealing ceremony, at the Place Vendôme. And Catherine Deneuve, who led the fight for the right to abortion, notably by signing the manifesto of the 343 sluts, was of course invited.
“We’re very French when we ask questions like that!”
The “Belle de jour” actress answered questions from journalists before the event began. She still wore her little Ukrainian flag pinned to the lapel of her jacket, which she displayed at fashion week a few days ago. The star admitted to being “very emotional”, although her hoarse voice was more the result of the flu. She who finds “tremendous“that this law was”accepted” also estimated: “We can’t comment on why we’re here. Otherwise I won’t be here.”
When a journalist asked him: “you are afraid that abortion will be called into question in France”Catherine Deneuve responded more dryly: “Well, listen, we’re not going to start over things again, we’ve only just…” And to tackle: “we’re really French when we ask questions like that!”
10 women honored by Emmanuel Macron
In his speech, the Head of State specified:The setbacks of our time have made it a necessity and an emergency […] We had to engrave the irreversible”. And to add: “This fight for the freedom of women’s bodies trumps all others […] Progress in women’s rights is progress in human rights.”. And this is why he paid tribute to 10 women, among them, Françoise Giroud, Gisèle Halimi, Joséphine Baker and Simone Veil.
