Inspired by the eponymous video game, “Borderlands” prioritizes action over finesse. A pre-teen product designed for summer in the United States, the phenomenon is now arriving on screens in France.

With a beautiful duo of actresses and good prospects on paper, Borderlands doesn’t quite live up to its promise. Starting as a space opera, moving on to a planet in the Mad Maxthen with a video game plot, from which it draws inspiration, the film does not stray from a well-trodden path.
Big summer release on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, this Borderlands on the big screen is distributed in 777 theaters in France.
Pandora, a paradise planet, has been corrupted by human colonization. Bounty hunter Lilith is on a mission to find the daughter of the galaxy’s ruler. A native of the planet, she must assemble a team of misfits – a pre-teen demolitionist, a bodybuilder, a mad scientist and a cumbersome robot – to face a crowd of aliens, in order to discover the secret of Pandora.
Borderlands is peppered with gorgeous sci-fi imagery, and the Cate Blanchett-Jamie Lee Curtis encounter works, but the film takes off badly. The setting, reminiscent of Mad Max by George Miller doesn’t help, even if the desert, which also evokes Dunegives beautiful shots in scope.
A chase film from the first scene and which doesn’t let up until the last image, Borderlands does not contain a shot longer than two seconds. A well-seen road movie for a summer release, with a great cast, the little Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), who has a lot to do, holds his own. However, the film never strays from the norm.
If you don’t really enjoy it, the pace can pick up, despite the repetitions, correctable with 10 minutes less. A very targeted film: not sure that parents will enjoy watching it as much Borderlands than their children.
