Reasonable doubt

Fans of Fortier and D’unbelievable on Netflix, you will love this crime thriller by Danielle Dansereau (19-2). It’s creepy, dark and twisted. We follow detective Alice Martin Sommer (Julie Perreault), who works for a special squad dedicated to sex crimes. With her partner (Marc-André Grondin), Alice will examine the assault of an escort by an influential man, as well as the collective rape of a cégépien member of a cycling team. Pay close attention to details. Everything is important.

Christine Beaulieu and Véronique Cloutier in Eye of the storm

Eye of the storm

Christine Beaulieu won a well-deserved Gemini Award for her role as a busy mother in this mind-blowing comedy. The texts are lively and the production modern. In this niche of the “family mental load” type, Eye of the storm beats all its competitors. Wedding planner and mother of three children, Isabelle (excellent Christine Beaulieu) barely manages to get her head out of the water, caught between her lunatic ex (Patrick Hivon), her sister cool (Véronique Cloutier) and her intrusive mother (Danielle Proulx). You can see it all at once.

Pier-Gabriel Lajoie and Karl-Antoine Suprice in The little kings

The little kings

Discover the universe of two best friends, Julep (Pier-Gabriel Lajoie) and Adaboy (Alex Godbout), at the top of the social pyramid of the Reine-Isabella college. Julep is gay and super BCBG, while Adaboy is straight and flamboyant. But the golden lives of these two young adults – and their clique – take an ominous turn when they start receiving threatening texts. You don’t become so popular without making enemies. For fans of Riverdale, Elite and pretty Little Liars.

The distribution of the series Without an appointment

Without an appointment

The international press describes Sex Education (from Netflix) as a series that deals with sexuality in a benevolent way and without taboos. In Quebec, Without an appointment deserves just as much – if not more – cheers. Original and deliciously transgressive, this comedy by Marie-Andrée Labbé (Too much), with Magalie Lépine-Blondeau, tells the tribulations of the employees of a sexual health clinic in Montreal. This adaptation of an Australian web series should serve as a model for broadcasters who want to show diversity organically on screen, without feeling that there were boxes to tick.

Zeneb Blanchet and Jade Charbonneau in Lou and Sophie

Lou and Sophie

One of the most beautiful surprises of 2021, signed by Yannick Éthier (The chalet, The Academy). You don’t have to be a “young adult” to appreciate this Thelma and Louise new generation, which offers performances inspired by Jade Charbonneau and Zeneb Blanchet. In front of the lens of directors Sandra Coppola and Félix Tétreault, these rising actresses encamp two rebellious teenagers who live a story of close friendship. Less crude and explicit thanEuphoria, Lou and Sophie is nonetheless vibrant. All that remains is to hope that Dolorès will lead the dynamic tandem straight to a second season.

Karine Vanasse in After

After

After the excellent Black beast, we doubted that a second series about a mass killing could grab us so much in 2021. Error. Showing a new facet of Karine Vanasse’s talent as an actress, this six-episode drama by author François Pagé paints a portrait of a small community in the Laurentians struck by horror. Never too heavy, After should get several selections in Gemini. Kathleen Fortin and Steve Laplante are almost certain of it.
