We thought that Caroline Garcia was going to fail at the gates of the feat. But the Frenchwoman finally won in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in 2h16) against Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the Warsaw Open, Friday July 29. A little less than a month after Alizé Cornet at Wimbledon, it is therefore another Frenchwoman who offers herself the scalp of the Polish, who was playing at home.

After a first act where she largely dominated the Polish player, the 45th in the world seemed to take the hit. In the third set, Caroline Garcia ended up breaking to lead 5-3, harassing a Swiatek visibly distressed on the clay courts of Warsaw. But his opponent is not the leader of the WTA ranking for nothing, and took advantage of a drop in service from the French to unbreak. At 5-4, the Pole seemed to be back in the game.

It was without counting on returns of service from Garcia, especially on the forehand, which hurt a lot. The Frenchwoman struck down lightning to win the match and reach the semi-finals of this WTA 250 tournament. She will be opposed to the Italian Jasmine Paolini. After a round of 16 at Wimbledon and a half in Lausanne afterwards, Garcia confirms his return to form with this last four in Poland.

For his part, S.wiatek, winner of Roland-Garros this year, had not lost a match on clay since her quarter-final at Roland-Garros 2021.
