(New York) Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Ian Cole was fined $ 5,000 for a knee injury to Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele.
The incident occurred during the third period of Tuesday’s game, when the Hurricanes won 4-2 in the Manitoba capital.
Cole was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct. Scheifele was not injured on the streak.
This amount is the maximum that the NHL can impose on a player under the collective agreement.
This is the third sanction imposed by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety this week for strikes with the knee. On each occasion, a Jets player has been involved.
On Monday, defenseman Neal Pionk received a two-game suspension for a similar act the day before against Rasmus Sandin, a defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Maple Leafs forward Jason Spezza was suspended six games for a knee injury to Pionk in the same game on Tuesday.
