Carlos Alcaraz beats Alexander Zverev to secure his first Roland-Garros title

(Paris) Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz came from behind and won the men’s singles final of the French Open tennis tournament, Sunday afternoon on the Philippe-Chatrier court at the Roland-Garros stadium.

In a clash that lasted 4 hours 19 minutes, Alcaraz defeated the German Alexander Zverev in five sets of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

At the age of 21, Alcaraz, who grew up watching Rafael Nadal collect trophy after trophy at Roland Garros – a record 14 in total – eclipsed his legendary compatriot by becoming the youngest player in history of men’s tennis to win a Grand Slam final on each of the three surfaces. Nadal was about 18 months older when he achieved such a feat.

His triumph on Sunday – achieved after falling from two sets to one, just like in his semi-final match against Jannik Sinner on Friday – allowed Alcaraz to add a title on the clay of Roland-Garros, after his coronations on hard court at the United States Open in 2022 and on the grass of Wimbledon last summer.

Alcaraz now has a perfect 3-0 record in Grand Slam singles finals.

In such circumstances, Zverev is now 0-2. In 2020, he lost in the final at the US Open after leading two sets to zero against Dominic Thiem.
