Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was indicted and placed under judicial supervision on Tuesday, July 9, in the investigation into Ziad Takieddine’s retraction concerning suspicions of Libyan financing of Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2007, franceinfo learned from a judicial source.

The wife of the former head of state is being charged with “concealment of witness tampering” and “participation in a criminal association with a view to committing the offence of fraud in court as part of an organised gang”, the source said. She was also placed under the more favorable status of assisted witness for criminal association with a view to the corruption of foreign judicial personnel in Lebanon.

Franco-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine had accused Nicolas Sarkozy of financing his campaign with Libyan funds. He finally retracted his statement in 2020 before going back on his remarks once again. A judicial investigation was opened in May 2021 for “witness tampering”, “criminal conspiracy to commit the crime of organized fraud” and “fraud to commit the crime of bribery of foreign judicial personnel”. In early October 2023, Nicolas Sarkozy was indicted in this case. He disputes the facts alleged.
