The year 2022 is off to a strong start! Released on Friday, this double album Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach by Marc-André Hamelin, a logical extension of his Haydn series, once again shows how dazzling and astounding the son Bach (1714-1788) emancipated himself from his father (1685-1750). CPE Bach paves the way for Haydn (Rondo in C minor), Mozart (Andante de la Fantasy in C) and Beethoven (The Aly Rupalich). The only reason why it is not more recognized is its profusion: it is impossible to encompass everything and to sort it out, hence the interest of albums like this one. The violence of the break-up of the CPE was accompanied in its time by an upheaval of the instrumental bill. The great sound encyclopedist of CPE Bach, Miklós Spányi (BIS), combines the two with a scrupulous choice of ancient instruments. Hamelin opts for a modern piano and immediately imposes (Sonata in A) amazing dexterity and hairline. This album, a great invitation to discovery, is introduced by a high-level text by Mahan Esfahani.
