British counterterrorism police have been tasked with investigating the explosion of a vehicle outside a hospital in Liverpool (UK) on Sunday 14 November. Merseyside Police said they were alerted around 11 a.m. local time and immediately intervened. “Unfortunately, we can confirm that one person has died and another has been taken to hospital where they are being treated for injuries, which luckily are not life threatening.”, she said in a statement.
“So far, we understand that the car involved was a taxi that stopped at the hospital shortly before the explosion”, said the police, who add that the “work is still in progress to establish what happened”. “We are keeping an open mind as to the cause of the explosion, but given the way it happened, as a precaution, the Counter Terrorism Police are conducting the investigation supported by the Merseyside Police, pursued the police. It has not been declared a terrorist incident at this point. “
Police lines were put in place and roads closed to traffic near the site of the explosion, from which heavy gray smoke escaped, according to images posted on local media websites. The police urged the population to “remain calm but vigilant”.
