Canucks offer Spencer Martin a two-year contract

(Vancouver) The Vancouver Canucks have offered goaltender Spencer Martin a two-year contract.

This one-sided deal suggests that Martin is a strong candidate to act as a backup for starter Thatcher Demko next season.

Martin, 26, played three games for the Canucks earlier this season, going 1-0-2 with a 1.59 goals-against average and .958 save percentage.

He stopped 33 shots in a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 27 for his first career NHL victory.

The goaltender has played in six career NHL games between Vancouver and the Colorado Avalanche (2.93 goals-against average and .916 save percentage).

Martin is 17-4-2, 2.39 GAA and .918 save percentage with the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League this season.

The Avalanche selected the Ontarian in the third round, 63and in total, in the 2013 NHL Draft.

“We are pleased with the success Spencer has had this season, not only in the AHL but also during his time with Vancouver earlier this year,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. He’s been very reliable at Abbotsford, helping secure their playoff berth earlier this month, and he’s shown his ability to shine under pressure. »
