With the rise in prices, meals in school canteens are more expensive for municipalities and their service providers. In order not to increase the price of the meal, they adapt.
In Chaville (Hauts-de-Seine), the school canteen menu has been shortened. “We can perhaps save money elsewhere than on the food of our children”, says a mother. Menus have fewer choices of starters. “It seems to me that having a full meal when you’re at school is a basic need”notes Laëtitia Alary, parent of a student.
This choice was made by the town hall, because its service provider is also experiencing rising costs. “There is no more entry for example from time to time, there is no more cheese (…) but once again, the quantity of food remains the same”, assures Stéphane Idoine, deputy director general of education at the town hall of Chaville (Hauts-de-Seine). In the Bas-Rhin, a service provider can no longer obtain supplies of certain products and has to change its recipes to adapt. Some town halls are already warning: the prices of school meals could increase from the start of the school year in September.
