Canadians enter the year 2023 with a certain pessimism engendered by fears that a recession will descend on the country, suggests an Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Global News.

According to the poll, no less than 75% of Canadians admitted that they are worried about the economy deteriorating in 2023. This rate even climbs to 83% for families with children.
However, when asked about their year 2022, 64% of respondents acknowledged that the last year has been good for them, while 51% of Canadians believe that the country has had a good year overall, torn between inflation and the end of the pandemic.
On the other hand, only 31% of respondents believe that the year has been good in the world, where the news has been dominated by the war in Ukraine.
“In summary, compared to the past two years, Canadians tend to view 2022 positively, particularly on a personal level. However, this optimism remains cautious when taking economic trends into account,” Ipsos commented in a statement to Global News.
Citizens in the Prairie provinces tend to be more pessimistic than those in the rest of the country, the firm also noted.
The poll was conducted Dec. 14-16 among 1,004 Canadians aged 18 and older.
