(Santo Domingo) Annabelle Chukwu scored twice in extra time as Canada beat Costa Rica 5-3 on Sunday in the third-place game at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship.
The victory secured Canada’s participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Under-20.
Kayla Briggs took the ball away from Costa Rican Ella Ottey and she delivered a perfect cross to Chukwu in the 101e minute. Chukwu entered the game early in the second half.
The 16-year-old Ottawan added an insurance goal in the 121e minute, rolling in a shot that thwarted goalkeeper Genesis Perez.
The Americans, defending champions of the tournament, will face the Mexicans later on Sunday. These two teams have already obtained their pass for the World Cup.
The two finalists and the squad that took third place in this eight-team Concacaf tournament will represent North America, Central America and the Caribbean at the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup years.
Trailing 3-2 in the second half, Canada forced extra time when Olivia Smith tied the game following a low cross from Briggs.
