Canadians are starting to travel more again, but the situation is still a long way from what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is what recent data from Statistics Canada shows. During the first quarter of 2022, Canadians made 46.5 million trips in Canada or abroad, which represents an increase of 20 million trips, compared to the same period last year.
However, recent statistical data from the first quarter represent less than three quarters (73.2%) of the number of trips made during the same period in 2019.
From January to March 2022, 93.5% of trips by Canadians were trips within the country. As an indication, in 2019, the percentage of travel made in the United States during this period was 15%.
Thus, Canadians prioritized domestic travel and spent twice as much ($10 billion) as for international stays ($5.8 billion).
Compared to 2019, spending by Canadians while traveling was down 3.9%.
