Canadian women qualified for the Paris Olympic Games

(Sopron) The Canadian women’s basketball team qualified for the Paris Olympic Games on Sunday.


Bridget Carleton led her team with 19 points and eight rebounds in an 86-82 loss to Japan in the qualifying tournament. But despite its 1-2 record, Canada qualified thanks to Spain’s 73-72 victory over Hungary.

“It’s a roller coaster of emotions when your destiny is in someone else’s hands,” said Canadian Natalie Achonwa, who had 12 points and nine rebounds in Canada’s loss on Sunday.

“It was so exciting to be able to celebrate this moment as a team, knowing that our dreams and goals will continue for another day, as we represent Canada in Paris,” she added.

This will be the maple leaf’s fourth consecutive appearance at the Olympic tournament.

Kayla Alexander scored 16 points and made 14 steals for Canada, ranked fifth in the world. Nirra Fields added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Evelyn Mawuli and Mai Yamamoto each totaled 21 points for Japan, ninth in the world and silver medalist at the last Games. The Japanese and Spanish women also qualified.

This tournament is one of four qualifying competitions for the Games.
