Already at the rendezvous of the last three Olympic ice hockey finals, the Canadians and the Americans once again competed for the gold medal in Beijing on Thursday 17 February. World champion “Team Canada” won (3-2) against reigning Olympic champion “Team USA”.

Already victorious against the Americans in the preliminary round (4-2), the Canadians confirmed their domination in a final full of intensity. Much more effective than their opponents, the new Olympic champions scored first thanks to Sarah Nurse, who became the top scorer (18) and assist (13) in an edition of the Winter Games.

Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin, already a passer on the opener, then carried her team to the gold medal by scoring two precious goals to protect Canada from an American comeback.

The Americans took advantage of a numerical superiority to revive thanks to a goal from Hilary Knight before pushing in the last period to come back level with the Canadians. These efforts were rewarded with a goal from Amanda Kessel, 13 seconds from the end of the match, but still insufficient to reverse the scenario. With a hit post, they will be able to regret their lack of efficiency, their weak point throughout this competition.

Canada won the gold medal in ice hockey by dominating the United States (3-2) in a contested final.

Beaten by the Americans four years ago (2-3), the Canadians won the gold medal for the fifth time in seven editions, since women’s ice hockey entered the Olympic program in 1998. Finland , victorious over Switzerland in the small final (4-0), completes the podium.
