Canadian Soccer Championship | Forge FC wins first leg of semi-final against Toronto FC

(Hamilton) Toronto FC’s free fall continued Wednesday as the MLS club lost 2-1 to Forge FC of the Canadian Premier League in the first leg of their Canadian Soccer Championship semifinal.


Beni Badibanga and Kwasi Poku scored for Forge FC, who led 2-0 after 14 minutes of play.

Reserve Prince Owusu scored an important goal for Toronto FC during the 88e minute of play, during a scrum after a corner.

TFC could have broken the deadlock in the five-plus minutes of stoppage time, but Forge goalkeeper Chris Kalongo made a save with a great save against Lorenzo Insigne. Deandre Kerr, meanwhile, missed the target with a header.

The second leg of the aggregate-goals series will take place on August 21 in Toronto.

TFC has lost its last seven games in all competitions and is winless in its last 10 outings (0-8-2). It has not won since May 18, when it crushed semi-pro club CS Saint-Laurent 8-1 in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Championship.

Forge FC surprised CF Montreal in the quarter-finals, winning 3-2 on aggregate.
