Canadian Screen Awards Gala will be pre-recorded

(Toronto) The Screen Awards gala, which recognizes the best in Canadian cinema and television, will once again be pre-recorded this year.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television also announced Thursday that the one-hour special will be broadcast on May 31 on CBC and its digital platform Gem, two weeks later than initially planned.

The Academy specifies that the trophies in the flagship categories, including best film, best television comedy and best television drama series, will be presented in front of an audience during a gala recorded at the CBC Broadcasting Center in Toronto and broadcast a few hours later .

The move comes after last year’s pre-recorded gala brought together highlights from galas held in previous days. That approach had drawn criticism from industry figures, including Eugene Levy, who said Canadian creators deserved a live gala.

Academy CEO Tammy Frick said this year’s show is different because it will be modeled after a gala held on the same day as the broadcast, to ensure there are no “such a gap” between the announcement of the winners and the broadcast.

The Canadian Screen Awards typically celebrate the best in film, television and digital media with a star-studded live show in front of an audience. This year’s finalists will be revealed on March 6.

Furthermore, “Canada on Screen Week”, initially scheduled for April 2024, will instead be held from Sunday May 26 to Saturday May 1.er June, “due to a room availability issue in Toronto”.
