(OTTAWA) A senior Canadian military officer who was being investigated for allegations of sexual misconduct has retired and traveled to Ukraine.

Defense sources say Lt. Gen. Trevor Cadieu hung up his uniform on April 5 while he was still under investigation by military police.

The sources, who were not authorized to comment on the case publicly, say the lieutenant general has since left to help defend Ukraine against the Russian invasion.

The 30-year-old military veteran was due to take over as commander of the Canadian Army in the fall.

But his change of command ceremony was put on hold while military police investigated what they described as “historical allegations” of sexual misconduct.

Mr Cadieu could not immediately be reached for comment but has previously denied any wrongdoing and alleged the complaint against him was aimed at casting doubt on his ability to lead.
