(Scottsdale) Canadian Nick Taylor won the Phoenix Open on the second overtime hole against Charley Hoffman on Sunday.
A native of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Taylor (65) made three birdies in the last four pennants to join Hoffman (64) in the lead at 263 (minus 21). The 35-year-old athlete was at the origin of a sixth extension in the last nine years in this tournament.
Both players made birdies on the first extra hole, then Taylor pared the second while Hoffman missed the birdie by inches.
It was Taylor’s fourth PGA Tour title and his second in overtime.
He had the upper hand over Tommy Fleetwood in overtime at the Canadian Open last year, making an eagle with a 21-meter putt on the fourth extra hole. He thus became the first Canadian to win this tournament in 69 years.
Taylor tied a record on the TPC Scottsdale course in the first round by shooting 60 (minus 11) to build a five-shot lead.
Two-time champion, Scottie Scheffler (66) entered the fight with five consecutive birdies at the end of the third round. The top-ranked player in the world led at the start of the fourth round before running into trouble on the greens.
He finished third at 266 (minus 18), tied with fellow American Sam Burns (64).
Also in the running, Canadian Corey Conners (66) finished 28e rank at 276 (minus-8). His compatriots Adam Svensson and Adam Hadwin were unable to avoid the ax after two rounds.
