Canadian News Blocking | Quebec will keep its ads on Meta platforms for now

(Quebec) Prime Minister François Legault is not ready for the moment to withdraw Quebec government advertisements on Meta platforms, like some Quebec media companies.

In a scrum after an announcement on Promenade Samuel-De Champlain in Quebec City, Mr. Legault was asked what the government will do with the ads it posts on Facebook and Instagram.

On Wednesday morning, Quebecor and Cogeco announced the suspension of their advertising investments on these social networks, evoking the means of pressure of the American company after the adoption of Online News Act in Ottawa.

Meta challenged the Trudeau government’s law and followed through on its threats by blocking all Canadian journalistic content on its platforms.

Premier Legault has said he’s fine with tech giants contributing to news media, but he’s not ready to boycott Meta just yet.

He added that the government must take into account the places where Quebecers get their information.

“It’s a new reality, but we haven’t reached the boycott stage. Not at the moment,” he argued.
