Canadian League | Edmonton Elks defeat Calgary Stampeders 37-16

(Edmonton) McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw two touchdown passes and the Edmonton Elks beat the Calgary Stampeders 37-16 on Saturday to move above them in the standings.


The Elks (5-8) have now won five of their last six games after a disastrous 0-7 start.

The Stampeders (4-8) have lost their last four games, a first since 2004, in 331 matches.

The Calgary team has still not won away from home this season, with a record of 0-6.

The game opened with two Elks singles and a 32-yard field goal by Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes.

The Stampeders then drove down the field to the Elks six-yard line, but quarterback Logan Bonner was intercepted in the end zone by Loucheiz Purifoy.

The Elks opened the second quarter with a big play when Bethel-Thompson completed a long pass to Hergy Mayala that turned into a 60-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was then completed on a pass to Eugene Lewis.

The Stampeders responded with a 42-yard field goal from Paredes.

But the Elks made it 17-6 midway through the second quarter when Bethel-Thompson connected with Tevin Jones for a 13-yard touchdown.

The Elks added field goals of 41 and 20 yards from Boris Bede and never looked back.
