Canadian Katherine Sebov qualifies for the Miami Open

(Miami) Canada’s Katherine Sebov qualified for the Miami Open main draw with a three-set victory over Jodie Burrage in the second round of tournament qualifying on Monday.

Sebov beat his opponent 6-7(2), 7-5 and 6-3. She had won her opener 6-4, 6-3 against Kamilla Rakhimova, seeded sixth in qualifying.

Outside of his home country, this is Sebov’s first WTA 1000 caliber tournament. Earlier this year, the 24-year-old Canadian qualified for her first career major tournament, at the Australian Open.

Currently ranked 172e world ranking, his highest ever ranking, Sebov also recently won a US$25,000 ITF tournament.

Sebov will therefore bring the total of Canadian women to participate in the Miami Open to four, with Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Annie Fernandez and Rebecca Marino.

Sebov and Fernandez could face off in the first round of the main draw, as Fernandez will play against a qualifier early in the tournament.

For her part, Andreescu will have a big challenge to start her tournament, she who will face Emma Raducanu, 72e world racket and winner of the United States Open in 2021. Andreescu ranks 31e rank.

On the men’s side, Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov are also in Miami to play in the tournament.
