Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser in Washington

Migration across the Canada-US border, in both directions, will likely be the order of the day on Tuesday, as federal Immigration Minister Sean Fraser visits Washington.

Mr. Fraser’s office has indicated that during this visit, the minister must meet his American counterpart, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

The federal Liberal government is under increasing pressure, particularly from Quebec, to find a solution to the flow of irregular migrants arriving in Canada from the United States, especially via Roxham Road in Montérégie.

In addition, some elected Republicans denounce the number of migrants who cross the Canada-US border, but in the other direction.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has publicly stated that it is time for Ottawa and Washington to renegotiate the Safe Third Country Agreement.

This agreement allows migrants to seek asylum in Canada if they arrive through unofficial ports of entry, such as Roxham Road.
