Canadian divers Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens won bronze in the 10-metre platform synchronized event on Monday at the Paris Olympics.
They became the first Canadian men to win an Olympic medal since Alexandre Despatie in 2008 in Beijing.
Zsombor-Murray of Pointe-Claire and Wiens of Saskatoon had a cumulative score of 422.13 points. China’s Junjie Lian and Hao Yang topped the competition with a score of 490.35 points. Britain’s Tom Daley and Noah Williams followed with 463.44 points.
The two Canadians didn’t have a perfect day. Zsombor-Murray slightly missed the third and fifth jumps, while Wiens struggled on the fourth jump — the most difficult of their program, a front tuck quadruple and a half somersaults.
However, Mexicans Kevin Berlin Reyes and Randal Willars Valdez also had their problems, leaving the way open for Zsombor-Murray and Wiens to take third place on the podium.
Reyes and Valdez have accumulated 418.65 points.
