(Ottawa) General Wayne Eyre has been officially appointed Chief of the Defense Staff on a permanent basis, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday.
“General Eyre will continue to work tirelessly to bring about cultural change in the Canadian Armed Forces, oversee efforts in this regard and earn the trust of survivors of sexual misconduct,” Trudeau said in a statement.
“I know he will continue to lead our Armed Forces with distinction and professionalism as they continue to protect Canadians and their values at home and abroad,” he added.
Wayne Eyre had served as the Canadian Armed Forces Acting Chief of Staff since February after taking over from Admiral Art McDonald.
Admiral McDonald resigned due to a military police investigation into his conduct, but had asked to be reinstated after the investigation did not result in any charges.
Instead, the Liberal government put him on administrative leave in August and promoted General Eyre before making the appointment permanent this week.
