Canada’s men’s soccer team could have an unforgettable summer this year with matches against the two best teams in the world.
Ranked 49are in the world, the representatives of the maple leaf could play a friendly match against France, second, before taking part in the Copa America in June.
The French daily The Team reported Friday that the French team could play on June 9 against the Canadians, in Bordeaux, before beginning their journey at the Euro, on June 14 against Germany.
Paulo Senra, head of communications and content at Canada Soccer, confirmed that his organization was “actively in communication with the French federation” for the holding of this friendly match.
A single antecedent
The two countries have faced each other only once before. It was during the very first match in Canada’s history at the World Cup, in 1986. Jean-Pierre Papin scored the only goal of the match in the 79the minute in a 1-0 victory for the French.
A possible match against France would be a second major challenge for the Canadians during this international window. Canada Soccer has already announced a duel against the Netherlands, seventh, on June 6 in Rotterdam.
CF Montreal midfielder Mathieu Choinière, who played in a win over Trinidad and Tobago that helped Canada qualify for the Copa America in his second match with the national side last month, is hoping to be able to take part in these matches.
“If you call me, playing against players of this caliber is exceptional,” Choinière said. It would be fun. We can compare ourselves to the best. It would allow us to prepare for the Copa America. »
In this tournament, Canada will notably cross swords with Argentina, first in the FIFA rankings.
