Canada’s Lost Luster

Brian Mulroney believes that “if you want to assert yourself internationally, you have to be ready to spend money, but also to commit yourself internationally”. I can only agree with him, remembering that Radio-Canada shut down RCI, its multilingual international shortwave (radio) service, to save $10 million a year. Today, when we wonder how to inform the Russians as objectively as possible despite local propaganda, Canada’s response is “come and read us on the Internet”. With web censorship, we wish them good luck! And Canada is not about to return to the air: we hastened to dismantle the field of antennas on the Atlantic coast and to cede the ground. Meanwhile, the BBC celebrates its centenary and its World Service is a reference. After that, Canada would like to have a seat on the UN Security Council. To do what ?
