Canada’s international reputation

Canada was once a respected interlocutor in global diplomacy. Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957, among other things, for his diplomatic efforts leading to the resolution of the Suez Canal crisis and the formation of NATO.

Today, relations are strained with China and India. NATO countries are criticizing Canada’s lack of military financial efforts. To top it all off, Canada Soccer is caught cheating at the Olympics, once a symbol of international cooperation and healthy fraternal competition. Imagine the outcry and outrage if it were China that had been caught cheating.

Canada is also rightly criticized for its support for oil companies and their pipelines and for its mixed efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

Canada is no longer in a position to serve as a credible mediator. Canadians, and also Quebecers by force of circumstances, are perceived as dishonest, unreliable and now cheating interlocutors.
