Canadian Kerri Einarson earned another bronze medal at the World Women’s Curling Championship.
Einarson defeated Sweden 8-5 on Sunday. Canada also won the bronze medal at this tournament last year, following an 8-7 victory over the Swedes.
The Canadian foursome entered the preliminary round with a 7-5 record. After defeating Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa 6-4 in the qualifying match, he lost 8-5 in the semi-finals to Norway’s Marianne Roervik on Saturday.
“I’m excited to come here and win a medal,” Einarson said. I know it’s not gold as we wanted it, but at least it’s a medal. To win the bronze medal two years in a row is special. »
Canada opened the game by scoring two in the first end. A steal in the second end and two more in the fourth gave the Maple Leafs a 6-1 lead.
Sweden scored two in the sixth end and added one in the eighth to cut Canada’s lead to 8-4. The Swedes stole a point in the ninth end, but couldn’t get any closer.
Captain Einarson’s team also includes Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard, Briane Harris and Krysten Karwacki. The coach is Reid Carruthers.
“The fact that we were able to win the bronze medal without our best performance this week means a lot to our team,” said Birchard. We want to come back and we want to fight for gold. Obviously, we were hoping to do it this week, but it wasn’t in the cards, so we’re looking ahead to next year. »
In the tournament final, Switzerland successfully defended their title by defeating Norway 6-3.
