Canada will send more than 20,000 artillery shells of ammunition to Ukraine, National Defense Minister Anita Anand announced on Tuesday.
According to the minister, these munitions represent “exactly” what the Ukrainian government asked of its allies.
Ms. Anand clarified that it is standard NATO ammunition which is compatible with the weapons supplied by Canada and other member countries to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
In April, Canada delivered four M777 howitzers to Ukraine. Ottawa has sent $130 million in military equipment since the war began in February.
The new ammunition is worth $98 million. This sum will be drawn from the $500 million in military aid that Canada has budgeted for Ukraine this year.
Ms. Anand said Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot just push his borders any way he wants and that Canada will continue to support Ukraine.
