Canada to restore funding to UNRWA in the Gaza Strip

Canada will restore its funding to the United Nations agency helping refugees in the Gaza Strip (UNRWA), the federal government announced.

Along with around fifteen other countries, Ottawa suspended future payments to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in January after Israel alleged that a A dozen of its workers are said to have participated in the bloody Hamas attack on October 7.

The Canadian government is due to pay $25 million to the agency known as UNRWA in April and had not missed any payments following the suspension.

International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen said he had reviewed an interim UN report on the allegations and that the decision was made in light of that information and the dire humanitarian situation.

The feds say it will also send $100,000 to the Jordan Hashemite Charity for supplies, including food and blankets, to be delivered to the territory.

The Canadian military will also provide approximately 300 equipment parachutes to the Royal Jordanian Air Force to help it airdrop critical supplies into Gaza.

Further details will follow.
