Canada reaches women’s rugby sevens final at Paris Olympics

Canada will battle for the gold medal after stunning Australia 21-12 in the semifinals of the women’s rugby sevens tournament at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.

Charity Williams, Asia Hogan-Rochester and Piper Logan all scored tries for Canada, and captain Oliva Apps was successful on all three of her conversion attempts.

Australia’s Sariah Paki and Maddison Levi hit back with a try each, and Tia Hinds converted one of her two conversion attempts.

The Canadians will now face tournament favourites New Zealand in the gold medal game on Tuesday night, while Australia will face the United States for bronze.

New Zealand thrashed Canada 33-7 in the group stage on Sunday.

The best result of the representatives of the maple leaf in women’s rugby sevens came in 2016, when they won bronze at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The discipline had just been added to the Olympic program.
