Canada reaches the final four at the U18 World Cup

Carter George made 23 saves for his second shutout of the tournament and helped Canada beat Latvia 4-0 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the World Under-18 Hockey Championship.

Captain Porter Martone scored a goal and 16-year-old sensation Gavin McKenna provided an assist.

McKenna ranks second in tournament scoring with 15 points, including six goals, in five games. Martone follows in third place with 14 points, including five goals.

Maxim Massé scored the winning goal on the power play 5:08 into the game.

Ryder Ritchie and Jett Luchanko, in an empty net, also scored for Canada. Tij Iginla and Harrison Brunicke each had two assists.

Mikus Vecvanags stopped 34 shots in front of the Latvia net.

Canada will face Sweden on Saturday in the semi-finals. Sweden defeated Finland 2-1 in their quarterfinal match.

Sweden crushed Canada 7-2 last year in the semifinals at this same tournament. Canada then defeated Slovakia 4-3 in overtime to win bronze.

Canada defeated Sweden 6-3 to open the tournament this year.

In the other semi-final, the United States, defending champions, will face Slovakia. The United States beat Switzerland 4-0 in the quarterfinals, while Slovakia defeated the Czech Republic 3-2.
