Canadian Brad Gushue had to settle for the silver medal at the World Men’s Curling Championship.
Gushue lost 9-3 to Scotland’s Bruce Mouat in the final at TD Place in Ottawa on Sunday.
Gushue, from Newfoundland and Labrador, won the world title in 2017 but lost a third final, having also finished second in 2018 and 2022.
Mouat won his first World Men’s Curling title. He won the bronze medal in 2018 and the silver medal in 2021.
Earlier in the day, Switzerland crushed Italy 11-3 to claim the bronze medal.
Yannick Schwaller’s foursome took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second end and a steal in the third.
The Swiss followed that up with a two-run larceny in the fourth end, then another three in the fifth end.
Schwaller and his teammates had help from Italian skip Joel Retornaz, who hit his own rock in the fifth end.
The Italian quartet scored their first two runs in the sixth set, but Switzerland fought back with three more runs in the next end.
Italy scored the game’s last point in the eighth end.
The Swiss completed the 12-game preliminary round in first place overall with an 11-1 record. However, they had to settle for the bronze medal after a 7-5 loss to Canada in the semifinals on Saturday night.
“The field was very tough and the teams are in such good shape,” noted Schwaller.
“Winning a medal with such a field is not easy. So we are very happy to have a medal.”
