Canada | Jonathan Sirois and Joel Waterman selected by the Canadian team

(Montreal) CF Montreal players Jonathan Sirois and Joel Waterman were selected to represent Canada during the next international window on Tuesday.

Sirois earned his second career call-up after being part of the team’s Concacaf Nations League match against Trinidad and Tobago on March 23.

Waterman was notably selected for the Canadian squad during the Copa América last June. The representatives of the Unifolié lost in a shootout during the third place match.

Transferred by CF Montreal to Grasshopper Club Zurich, in Switzerland, earlier this morning, midfielder Mathieu Choinière has also secured his place with the Canadian team.

Canada will play two friendlies during the September international window. Jesse Marsch’s squad will face the United States at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City on the 7th before taking on Mexico at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on the 10th.

Quebecer Samuel Piette, one of the veterans of CF Montreal and Canada, was ignored by Marsch for these two duels.

The head coach instead opted for midfielder Niko Sigur, who joined Canada after a FIFA-approved change of national representation. The 20-year-old is also eligible to play for Croatia and has already played nine games with the country’s under-21 team.

Also making his Canada debut will be 23-year-old forward Stephen Afrifa, who plays for Sporting Kansas City and is eligible to represent Ghana.

Captain Alphonso Davies, his assistant Stephen Eustaquio and forward Jonathan David were also selected to the 23-man squad. Quebec midfielder Ismaël Koné was left out with an ankle injury suffered earlier in August.

“We are excited to bring the group back together after a positive run at the Copa América,” Marsch said in a statement. “We look forward to playing against two of the best teams in our region to prepare for the upcoming Concacaf competitions.”
