Canada still has its destiny in its hands in women’s curling and it found the right moment to get a good streak.
Skip Jennifer Jones scored a winning field goal on the last rock of the match as Canada triumphed 7-6 over the United States on Wednesday at the Beijing Olympics.
With two American rocks in position to score, in the 10th and final end, Jones sent his just beyond the button, but close enough to the center to score the only point and confirm his team’s victory.
It’s a third straight win for Canada, who improved their record to 4-3 to improve their chances of making the playoffs.
The Canadian team started the day in sixth place overall, tied with South Korea’s EunJung Kim. The top four teams advance to the medal round.
Jones will face China’s Yu Han later in the evening. Canada will wrap up the round robin with Denmark’s Madeleine Dupoint on Thursday.
The men’s quartet, led by Brad Gushue, was not in action on Wednesday.
Canadian skier Max Moffatt was in action and finished the slopestyle event in ninth place.
Moffatt scored 70.40 bridges on his third and final run, but it was too little, too late for the Canadian in this tough final.
On his first run, Moffatt left the rail too quickly, earning him a 47.18 score. In his second, he was a little more precise during his technical elements and he collected 65.31 points.
The result comes less than a month after the Caledon, Ont., native won silver in slopestyle at the X Games on Jan. 23 in Aspen, Colorado.
Moffatt had recorded a 20th-place finish in the high jump event at the Beijing Games, which took place last week.
In the first men’s slalom downhill in alpine skiing, Canadian Erik Read took 22nd position with a time of 55.90 seconds. He is almost two seconds behind the Austrian Johannes Strolz, who sits at the top.
Trevor Philp, the other representative of the maple leaf to participate in this competition, did not finish his first run and he saw his day end that way.
