(Ottawa) Canada announced Tuesday new sanctions against Moscow collaborators in Moldova, a former Soviet republic located between Ukraine and Romania.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Tuesday that the new sanctions targeted nine Moldovans who have “links with influential oligarchs.”
Some people sanctioned Tuesday are also affiliated with the Shor Party, sanctioned by Canada in June 2023 “in response to this party’s ongoing efforts to destabilize the democratically elected Moldovan government for the benefit of Russia.”
Canada is also sanctioning six television channels that were taken down by Moldovan authorities because they broadcast Russian disinformation to justify Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The sanctions come as Moldova, a nascent democracy with a pro-Western government, seeks to coordinate international support.
His government claimed in February that Russian-backed elements had tried to orchestrate a coup in the country bordering Ukraine.
