Canada expects to welcome 500,000 immigrants in 2025

In 2023 and 2024, the immigration thresholds will be 465,000 and 485,000 newcomers, said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.

Result: the Trudeau government predicts that nearly 1.5 million immigrants will settle in Canada over the next three years. In 2022, Minister Fraser estimates that 430,000 immigrants will have been accepted into the country.

“Canada needs more people. We are a nation built on immigration,” said the minister, who made the announcement in Toronto at a trades training center.

“Immigration is not only good policy for our economy, it is also essential. We have a million vacancies right now. This is the economic context in which we find ourselves today,” he added.

While the federal government opens its doors more to newcomers, the Legault government plans to limit the number of immigrants who can settle in Quebec to 50,000. Such a gap between the two thresholds risks accelerating the decline of Quebec’s demographic weight within the Canadian federation.

More details to come.
