Canada continues its quest for a place in the world

(Edmonton) Canada’s National Men’s Team continues its quest to secure a berth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This time, head coach John Herdman’s men host Costa Rica this Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

Canada remains undefeated in the CONCACAF round robin tournament. In six games, Canada has two wins and four draws for third place. The top-3 of the eight-team tournament will go straight to the Worlds.

By virtue of its record, Canada has ten points in six games, two more than Panama in fourth place and one behind the United States in second.

A victory against Costa Rica could allow Team Canada to solidify this third position.

Costa Rica (1-3-2) is fifth with six points in six games.

Canada has scored 10 goals in its first six outings. Their offensive production places the team first with Mexico for the most goals scored among the eight remaining Concacaf teams.

Friday’s game mostly marks the return home of prodigal son Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich striker, and international soccer star, returns to Edmonton, the city where he grew up, to defend his country’s colors.

This week, Davies said he would have “a few butterflies,” but quickly chase away the nervousness to focus on collecting the three points associated with a win.

Coach Herdman has let it be known that he will count on a group of healthy players. After receiving Costa Rica, Canada will host Mexico on Tuesday, still in Edmonton.
