The electronics retail giant’s Prime service, which offers free shipping on several products, access to its streaming platform and includes an array of other benefits, will start costing more immediately for new subscribers.
Existing customers will see their price increase starting next month.
Amazon Prime’s monthly rate will increase by $2 to $9.99, while the annual plan price will increase by $20 to $99 per year.
This is the first price increase for the Prime service since Amazon launched it in Canada in January 2013.
The company said it made the decision as “Amazon continues to invest heavily in Prime” with a wider selection of products and the introduction of a new free one-day delivery service to most Canadian cities. with no minimum purchase amount requirement.
Prime Video, Amazon’s answer to competing streaming services Netflix and Crave, has also grown its catalog of original programming in recent years.
Monthly service subscribers will see the increase take effect from May 13, while annual subscribers will be exposed to it on their renewal date.
Amazon announced a third price hike for its Prime service in the United States in February, which raised the monthly rate to US$14.99 and the annual rate to US$139.
