Canada advances to women’s hockey semifinals

Brianne Jenner and Sarah Fillier both scored hat tricks to lead Canada to a convincing 11-0 win over Sweden in the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics women’s hockey tournament on Friday.

Jenner and Fillier are the two top scorers in the tournament, with eight goals each.

The United States, for their part, defeated the Czech Republic 4-1 in the other quarter-final match presented. The Canadians and Americans are therefore awaiting Saturday’s results to know their opponents in the semi-finals.

Jamie Lee Rattray, Erin Ambrose, Natalie Spooner, Blayre Turnbull and Emily Clark also scored for Canada. Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Nurse distinguished themselves with four assists each.

Emerance Maschmeyer posted an 11-save shutout in his second start of the Beijing Games.

At the other end of the rink, Emma Soderberg stopped 30 of 39 shots aimed at her in the first two periods. She gave way in the third period to Ida Boman, who stopped 15 shots.

Filler and Jenner are one goal away from tying the tournament record. Canadian Meghan Agosta and Swiss Stephanie Marty both scored nine times in Vancouver in 2010.

On Saturday, the last two quarter-final matches will feature Russia against Switzerland, as well as Finland against Japan.

The gold medal game will take place on February 17.
