Can the Macronist and LR tenors really abandon the Prime Minister?

The Macronist and LR deputies are not really in a position to be able to impose their red lines on Michel Barnier. Beyond the declarations, neither of them have an interest in the Prime Minister failing to form a government.

Michel Barnier postponed, on Wednesday, September 18, his meetings with Gabriel Attal and the leaders of the Ensemble group, and with Laurent Wauquiez and the leading figures of the Republicans. The Macronists and the right are putting on the pressure. Can they go so far as to bring down the new Prime Minister? No, or else it would cost them very, very dearly. The right has just won the lottery. It is finally returning to power, 12 years later, when it has never been so weak at the polls and in the Assembly. As for the Macronists, dropping Michel Barnier means immediately transforming Emmanuel Macron into a target, into someone responsible for the political deadlock, and raising the specter of resignation over the Élysée. Moreover, LR and Ensemble rule out censoring Michel Barnier. They are raising the stakes, the right is greedy for positions, the Macronists are making the refusal of any tax increase the condition of participation in the government, but there is a good deal of bluff.

Michel Barnier is exasperated by these childish actions, these tantrums of spoiled children. It is true that watching Gabriel Attal, Gérald Darmanin, Laurent Wauquiez and others doing their waving their arms while already thinking about the presidential election, we can see to what extent the surge of the Republican Front was ephemeral. Michel Barnier therefore called public opinion to witness on Wednesday by stating “discover” a “very serious budgetary situation” Who “demands responsibility” And “deserves better than little phrases.” Before explaining himself in the afternoon with the head of state in a one-on-one meeting at the Élysée.

The Macronists are condemned to support this Prime Minister. This is not a marriage of love, but a marriage of convenience, necessary for both parties. Michel Barnier and the Macronists are forced to support each other. It is a matter of reason, and even a question of political survival when the extreme right lurks at the gates of power. Unless… this rickety team ends up like in the famous fable of the scorpion and the frog crossing a river. Do you know it? A scorpion asks a frog to carry him to the other bank. She accepts, thinking that if the scorpion stings her, they would both perish. In the middle of the river, however, the scorpion stings the frog. She asks him why? The scorpion answers: “I couldn’t help it, it’s in my nature…” If the Macronist scorpion stings the Barnier frog, everyone sinks.
