While energy tensions are expected to continue next winter, 15% of gas imported into the European Union in 2023 still comes from Russia.

Despite the war ravaging Ukraine, and the sanctions taken by the European Union against Russia, member states continue to obtain their natural gas supplies from the same Russia. A financial windfall for Moscow.

Before the February 2022 offensive, 45% of European gas was Russian. This proportion has fallen sharply, but remains 15% today. If the Nord Stream gas pipeline is stopped, Russian gas still arrives in Europe via a gas pipeline which passes through Turkey and another which crosses Ukraine at war to Slovakia, to supply Austria and Hungary in particular .

Imports of Russian liquefied gas fall in France

Russia also supplies liquefied natural gas (LNG) to European countries from a gas field in Siberia. This source of supply has taken on increasing importance with the energy crisis. French imports of this LNG have fallen by 13% since the start of the war, in favor of other sources, but they have more than doubled in Spain and Belgium. However, the European Union still has the objective of no longer import Russian gas in 2027.
