Texas was at the center of the American presidential campaign, Thursday February 29: outgoing President Joe Biden was in Brownsville, a border town with Mexico, where he once again called on his adversaries to find a compromise on the issue of immigration . Donald Trump was a few hundred kilometers further west, but still close to the Mexican border, at Eagle Pass. This city of 30,000 inhabitants is a symbol of the standoff between Democrats and Republicans over immigration.

A Trump faithful to his very anti-migrant speech, described as “criminals”, and who was on conquered territory: red caps and flags bearing the image of Trump, there were hundreds waiting for the visit of the former president. A first for this small town where many appreciate the anti-immigration rhetoric carried by Donald Trump.

Enrique, himself arrived around fifty years ago from Piedras Negras, a twin town a few hundred meters on the Mexican side, no longer wants to see migrants in his town: “We have to stop immigration by force, the Texas way, with guns. We have to solve your problems in your country. Not here.”

The former president, who arrived discreetly, met the very conservative governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. It was he who installed buoys, barbed wire and the Texas Republican Guard along the Rio Grande. A work praised by Donald Trump, who took the opportunity to attack Joe Biden.

“It’s a Joe Biden invasion. It’s been going on for three years. He’s destroying our country.”

This very offensive speech from the former president pleases Republicans, like Sandy: “It’s draining our economy, it’s making everything go up. It’s a big problem. Trump says we have to think of ourselves first, just like we would think of our children first. So when we take care of ourselves, then we can help others.”

Many want to believe that on the migration crisis, Trump will be the man for the job. The former president once again promises mass expulsions if he is elected.
