On the occasion of her 70 years of reign, the festivities of which will take place in June 2022, Queen Elizabeth II has made an announcement: she wants Camilla, the wife of her son Charles, to be named queen consort when he will succeed him and that he will become king. Until now, the Queen of England had never spoken on this sensitive subject.

For her 70 years of reign, Elizabeth II has just offered a royal gift to her daughter-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. In an official document, she writes that she “sincerely” wishes that she become, upon her death, queen consort alongside her son Charles, the future monarch. For Camilla, it is the highest status of the monarchy to which she could claim. Camilla has already been married once, marrying the Prince of Wales in 2005, she could have kept the less prestigious title of princess consort.

For the future reigning couple, it is therefore the ultimate official recognition of a love story that began long before the marriage of Charles and Diane in 1981. Camilla, unloved, remained for all these years in the shadow of her rival. Since Diana’s death, Charles’ wife has become indispensable to the royal family. Her simplicity and discretion seduce many Britons who no longer oppose her future status as queen consort.
